The North Shore Neighbourhood House (NSNH) is a not for profit registered charity that has been serving the North Shore community since 1939. NSNH is committed to meeting the grassroots needs of its neighbors especially the vulnerable residents, to build a safe, healthy and strong community.

The Edible Garden Project (EGP) is a program under the North Shore Neighbourhood House. EGP is actively engaged in increasing food production land, educating people about food gardening and collaborating with municipalities to enhance urban agriculture opportunities.

Position Overview

The Program Assistant will support the Farm, Market and Education programs based on the program’s needs, the assistant’s skills and interests. They will work closely with the Farm Coordinator to facilitate ongoing farm operations at the urban farm site and with the Education Coordinator to deliver educational programs for children and youth. Additionally, one assistant will support the Saturday market with the Community Food Animator.

Candidates with varying degrees of experience in these areas are encouraged to apply.

General Responsibilities

The duties of the Program Assistant may vary with the season, program needs and collaborative schedules with EGP staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Farm maintenance tasks such as weeding, thinning, pruning, transplanting, watering, soil preparation, organization and record keeping.
  • Management and maintenance of social enterprise urban farms.
  • Participation in harvesting and processing activities.
  • Physical farm labor including cleaning and organizing.
  • Development and delivery of hands on learning programs for children and youth.
  • Educational visits to school gardens and EGP gardens and farms.
  • Assistance at Community Markets and Farm Gate sales.
  • Coordination of volunteers during drop in sessions.

Qualifications & Eligibility

  • Experience working with children in outdoor settings.
  • Physical fitness for tasks like squatting, bending and lifting at least 40lbs.
  • Passion for environmental education and food growth.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team player.
  • Ability to work outdoors in any weather condition.
  • Flexibility to work long hours and weekends (Tuesday Saturday schedule, occasional evening work during market season).
